National Heritage Open Day Sat 10th Sept

Cullercoats is a picturesque coastal villlage in the North East of England, nestled between Tynemouth and Whitley Bay. Its harbour is instantly recognisable for its semi-circular sandy beach with cliffs and caves.

Cullercoats used to be a thriving fishing village in its heyday and many years before that there was also a busy coalmine. Cullercoats port used to export many tons of both coal and salt refined from salt pans on the cliff tops. However, the salt industry gradually declined and the growth of the railways led to coal shipments being relocated to better harbours. This left fishing as the main industry in the village until the 70s and 80s when the decline of the vast schools of Herring and Cod and Haddock stocks in the North Sea decimated the local fishing fleets

The Community Centre has regular Heritage meetings where the local community come together, share their experiences and look through old photographs and artifacts that remain in the community from Cullercoat's rich local history.

On Saturday 10th September we will be hosting a free Cullercoats Heritage Open Day as part of the National Heritage Open Day Network from 11am to 2pm. There'll be a large number of fascinating local heritage displays and Newcastle Cloggies will be back due to popular demand for another toe-tapping display of wood-clad nimbleness plus a fascinating proggy mat demonstration from our friends the Mat & Chat Earsdon group. It's a great event suitable for all the family - we look forward to seeing you there.
